Perez Reviews: Jesus Christ Superstar

Sadly, our trip to New York has come to and end! Thankfully, though, we went out on a very satisfying note as we caught the new Broadway revival of Jesus Christ Superstar on Saturday night, which was wholly enjoyable! Far more so than we thought it would!
We had never seen the Andrew Lloyd Weber rock opera, nor had we heard any of the music. We went into it still burned by our recent experience seeing Godspell, which we HATED. Fortunately for us, this experience was much better! Much MUCH better!
The music was beautiful and very Evita-esque. It did not feel dated. And the new production was like Jesus Christ Superstar meets Ghost, only much MUCH better than Ghost.
The direction was wonderful. The show moved along briskly. The set and costumes were great. We were especially moved by the choreography, which was inspired. It felt like such organic movement and not like the bad modern dance we saw in Ghost.
Josh Young wowed us with his portrayal of Judas and showed all why he deservedly was nominated for a Tony award.
The one piece of the pie that didn’t taste as good as the rest, unfortunately, was Jesus. The superstar tagline just did not fit with Paul Nolan’s portrayal. While he was not bad, he was far from a “superstar” and was easily outshined by Young. However, a lot of that may just be due to how the parts are written. It seemed to us – at least in this production – that Jesus Christ Superstar is really Judas’ show.

In a recent interview, JC showered 1D with compliments, saying:
“I think you see five young people that are really enjoying the moment and sharing it with everyone. I think they’re feeding off the crowd and they’re giving it right back to them, and it’s a lot of fun when you see what’s going on around them.”
Awww! We love how the boyband veterans are spreading love to the newbies!
JC also calls Niall, Harry, Louis, Liam and Zayn a breath of fresh air and that he thinks the groups smash hit, What Makes You Beautiful is young and refreshing!”
Hey, JC! You know what would really REFRESH us??? An *NSYNC reunion!
Maybe you can rethink and reshuffle those cards and get the group back into the game!!!
