Crossover appeal: When two shows collide

A trailer has appear which shows a historic collaboration episode between The Simpsons and Family Guy. Of course, everything ever is ‘historic’ because it is something that happened in the whole of man’s annals, however, this one is of note because it is bound to make two hugely popular things and tarnish them slightly.

The special episode sees the Simpson and Griffin families meet up, and they make pals and of course, fall out.

The Griffins visit Springfield and Peter and Homer bond over food, planes while Bart and Stewie skateboard and prank call Moe. It’s all the stuff you’d expect.

The fall-out seems to occur over beer differences.

So, with that, let us look at the (long) trailer of The Simpsons and Family Guy, and also, a load of other brilliant and weird crossover shows.

You’ll be surprised at which of your favourites have locked antlers.

Simpsons vs Family Guy

Beer. Slapstick. Tasteless jokes. Noticing skin colour differences. It’s all here.

Roseanne vs Absolutely Fabulous

Here’s a wonderful thing – two of the funnest, best and daftest TV shows ever written, crash landing into each other and probably one of the most successful crossovers. The perfume scene is still wonderful.

Mork & Mindy vs Happy Days

Many don’t know that Mork & Mindy was one of the many spin-off shows from Happy Days, so it is always worth showing off the times The Fonz and Mork met. It isn’t particularly good, but it is fascinating to watch – like a lorry load of pigs crashing on a dual carriageway.

Fresh Prince vs Diff’rent Strokes

This whole mash-up was designed for one joke and one joke alone. You can watch the clip below and wait for it, if you haven’t guessed what it is.

Batman vs Green Hornet

Batman met Bruce Lee in an episode of the show which involved a daft fiendish plan designed to stop super heroes from doing their job by turning them into giant postage stamps. Seriously. There’s actually two versions of the episode, where the heroes swap roles for their respective shows.

Power Rangers vs Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Okay. What can you say about lycra-clad kung-fu getting helped out by three zany turtles who can also do martial arts? Nothing. Watch the clip and enjoy the cheapness.

Cheers vs St Elsewhere

Two gigantic, iconic shows wander into each other, with some of the St Elsewhere crew turning up at the Cheers pub for a drink. This kind of thing should happen more often.

Ally McBeal vs The Practice

Two of the biggest shows in America came together for a special which will have passed most UK viewers by because we didn’t give any love to The Practice.

Magnum PI vs Murder She Wrote

Seriously. While this is not the best video, this is proof that Magnum once worked with Jessica Fletcher. That’s amazing.

#GazaJ19: On The Israel-Gaza March With Bigots, Humanitarians, Dead Baby Pornographers And Bullshitters

PA 20437402 #GazaJ19: On The Israel Gaza March With Bigots, Humanitarians, Dead Baby Pornographers And Bullshitters

PEOPLE massed in London today to protest against Israel’s actions in Gaza. Many came to sue for peace. But their message of love was sullied by others who needed an excuse to call the Jewish state Nazis (a conniving insult that mocks Holocaust victims) and wanted genocide, demanding that Israel and, presumably, her inhabitants be annihilated for the good of all decent mankind:

At one point, a woman on the podium shouted “from the river to the sea” — a call for the elimination of Israel — and protesters responded by yelling “Palestine will be free.”

Heartfelt humanitarian concerns were much in evidence. But we also saw flags for the liberals and peaceniks of Hizbollah…

Hezbollah #GazaJ19: On The Israel Gaza March With Bigots, Humanitarians, Dead Baby Pornographers And Bullshitters

… and some classic Anti-semitism.

  Some spotted an agenda:

The Stop The War Coalition, who months ago told the Guardian that protesting over Syria isn’t their job as they only focus on “what Britain and the US are doing”, made their usual exception for Israel by helping to organising Friday’s demonstration outside the Israeli Embassy in London.

But innocent people are dying.  A Lasting peace with all sides – with all their nuances and shades – recognising the other’s right to exists is the only hope.

At Children of Peace, Richard Martin sees the waste of life:

In just the last few weeks Israeli and Palestinian children and young people have been paying the ultimate price for a conflict not of their making.

The mutilated bodies of three Israeli Jewish youths Eyal Yifrach, Gil-ad Shaar and Naftali Fraenkel, probably kidnapped by Hamas operatives on June 12, are found in a field north of Hebron. A three year old Palestinian girl is killed in Gaza when a Hamas Kassam rocket aimed at Israeli civilians, misfires. Just hours after the Israeli youths are laid to rest, the body of kidnapped Israeli Arab Aran Muhammad Hussein Abu Khdeir, aged 16 is found burned in a Jerusalem forest, possibly murdered by Jewish extremists. A 15 year old Israeli Arab boy, Mohammed Karkara from Arruba, bringing water to an IDF patrol is killed by Syrian forces using an anti-tank missile, on the Golan border. In recent days, four boys playing on a beach at the Gaza harbour were tragically killed by Israeli navy gunfire. Today, three teens were killed in Beit Hanoun, Gaza during the latest Israeli engagement with Hamas.

Others just want to focus on children. Children die in war. It’s a horror.  On Israel, the dead children are named, paraded before the cameras and become front-page news – something that does not happen in every bloody battle. Is Israeli militarism more brutal and terrible than any other kind of militarism?

On the Telegraph:

There is a terrible irony to this widespread publishing of photos of battered Palestinian children – the aim seems to be to show that we the right-minded folk of Twitter and the Western media really care, but the question it immediately raises in my mind is this: “Well, if you care about children so much, why didn’t you publish photos of dead kids from the Congo? Or Aleppo? Or Sri Lanka? Do you only care about one group of children – Palestinians – and no others?” So a photo-sharing frenzy aimed at advertising our caring tendencies actually has the opposite effect: it makes one wonder why this alleged caring instinct is so picky, so partial , attaching itself firmly to the child-victims of one conflict but rarely finding expression in relation to any other conflict.

PA 20437487 #GazaJ19: On The Israel Gaza March With Bigots, Humanitarians, Dead Baby Pornographers And Bullshitters

But what about facts? Let’s stick to a basic on. How many were there on the march?

Russia Today: “Thousands have turned out in London and Oslo to call for an end to Israeli strikes in Gaza”

BBC: “Thousands of people have marched through central London to call for an end to Israel’s ground campaign and rocket attacks on Gaza… Before the event up to 15,000 people were expected to attend. However, the police were not able to verify how many were there.”

ITV: “15,000 Gaza protesters march on London”

Evening Standard:

Nearly 15,000 people marched through the capital from Downing Street to the Israeli embassy in Kensington this afternoon”

Socialist Worker: “Up to 100,000 people streamed through the streets of London today, Saturday, in one of the biggest anti-war demonstrations in years.”

And as Channel 4 puts it:

Estimates of demonstrators ranged from 15,000 to 100,000

And nothing in between.

Such is the standard of reporting on Israel when even the most simple fact is adapted to fit a prejudice.

Marvel Are Turning Comics Upside Down With Gender And Race Swaps

THERE’S no two-ways about it – comics have been a bit white, male and hetero. Of course, that isn’t entirely the case, but chances are, your favourite superhero is a straight white guy.

However, everything is turning on its head. Iron Man is getting a new silver suit for a kick off. Okay, that’s not interesting. How about this – Thor is now a woman. It isn’t Thorette or Thorita. Thor is now a woman. About time there was another female leading role in comicsville.

And now, Captain America is red, white and blue… and black.

Captain America Falcon Marvel Are Turning Comics Upside Down With Gender And Race Swaps

Marvel announced that Captain America’s mantle will be taken over by his long-time pal, the Falcon, the soaring superdude from Harlem (who is normally called Sam Wilson).

“It’s about time,” says Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort of the change. “In 2014, this should be a thing that we shrug off, it shouldn’t be seen as revolutionary, but it still feels exciting.”

Brevoort says the Falcon becomes the new Captain America as Steve Rogers has been turned into a 90-year-old fossil in the most recent storyline.

And things are about to get exciting too.

“This is the fireworks factory we’re arriving at, and now everything’s going to blow up and be very pretty and exciting to look at,” said Rick Remender, the author of the forthcoming series. “I’ve been having a lot of fun writing Sam. It’s a completely different attitude. The fact that he’s not a soldier shifts things up a bit. Sam’s not going to be Steve. Steve can be very rigid. That can be kind of joyless at times, whereas Sam is absolutely not that.

“He’s a modern day man in touch with the problems of the 21st century. For most of his professional life, Sam has worked as a social worker, so he’s seen the worst of urban society up close, and how crime, poverty, lack of social structure and opportunity can affect the community. So he’s got perhaps a greater focus on the plight of the common man, and perhaps a greater empathy for the underprivileged than maybe even Steve himself.”

“We have more of a global audience than ever,” says Brevoort.

“And that just makes us more aware that we have more readers of different backgrounds who are hungry for characters who come from circumstances like their own. Our creators take that seriously.”

No, will the Geek Universe have the stones to make a leading and loved character come out as gay? If anyone’s going to do it, Marvel will.

SHIA LABEOUF Getting A-List Support From Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie?

shia labeouf, brad pitt & angelina jolie (1)Rumor has it Shia LaBeouf and Brad Pitt didn’t get along well while filming their movie ‘Fury’ together. However, OK! Magazine reports the bad blood is behind them as Brad and Angelina Jolie are supporting Shia in his effort to turn his life around. In these pictures of Shia, he was spotted going to the gym for a workout. RELATED: Shia LaBeuf was arrested in a Broadway theater.

A source told OK!:

Brad and Angelina admire anyone who works to turn their life around, so they wanted to offer Shia a helping hand,” reveals an insider. “They understand how hard it can be to kick demons.” The source believes that looking back on his time with Shia, 28, Brad realized that the partying had taken over his personality.
“Brad sees a lot of his old, rebellious self in Shia. Brad’s a positive guy who tries to put good energy out there whenever he can. He loves a success story.”

That’s probably really helpful for Shia! He really does seem to be struggling. Yet I’ve seen a lot of pics of Shia going to AA meetings and hitting the gym since his NYC arrest. He really does seem to be making a big effort to turn his life around. I’m sure positive energy can only help at this point.

The 10,000 Hours Rule Doesn’t Actually Work: The Tabula Rasa Fallacy

IT’S a common enough idea, that you need to practice at something for 10,000 hours to actually be any good at it. And that might well be true, too. However, the idea does sometimes (ie, in almost all of he UK education system) get mixed up with the idea that if you do 10,000 hours practice then you will be good at something. And that just ain’t true.

The idea that all children can be anything they want to be has deep roots in the UK educational system. If only people were educated in just the right manner then anyone at all could become a doctor, a pilot, a politician. Looking around of course that last has happened bu the other two not so much. And we’re constantly told that it really is only inherited privilege that stops everyone from having prices. This is known as the “tabula rasa” argument and it’s complete bollocks of course.

Quite apart from anything else if skills, aptitudes and intelligence were not inheritable then we’d have a hell of a time explaining how evolution happened.

But back to our 10,000 hours argument. That much practice is a necessary condition for being really good at something but not a sufficient one:

More than 20 years ago, researchers proposed that individual differences in performance in such domains as music, sports, and games largely reflect individual differences in amount of deliberate practice, which was defined as engagement in structured activities created specifically to improve performance in a domain. This view is a frequent topic of popular science writing–but is it supported by empirical evidence? To answer this question, we conducted a meta-analysis covering all major domains in which deliberate practice has been investigated. We found that deliberate practice explained 26% of the variance in performance for games, 21% for music, 18% for sports, 4% for education, and less than 1% for professions. We conclude that deliberate practice is important, but not as important as has been argued.

It is necessary to have the initial talent, the aptitude, as well as the practice. It just isn’t true that every unique little snowflake can be whatever they want to be.
