This wasn’t unexpected, but I’m sure Kate Middleton (a.k.a. Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge) is disappointed, nonetheless. Kate and Prince William reportedly met with her doctors yesterday and then took the evening to decide before announcing their decision this morning that she would not be able to travel to Malta for her first solo overseas trip. Prince William will go in her place.
Kate’s doctors reportedly advised against the trip, according to what sources told Us Weekly and People. The Palace said in a statement:
The Duchess of Cambridge will no longer visit Malta this weekend. The Duke of Cambridge will undertake the visit instead. Her Royal Highness continues to suffer from the effects of Hyperemesis Gravidarum. The decision not to visit was taken by the Duke and Duchess on the advice of the Duchess’s doctors.
“The Duke is honored to represent Her Majesty The Queen on the visit, which commemorates the 50th anniversary of Malta’s independence. The visit itinerary remains unchanged.”
Clarence House confirmed the change in plans with a tweet.

I’m sure this was a tough decision, but it’s completely understandable. The Duchess will have plenty of chances to go on solo overseas trips over the years! Right now she has to take care of herself. And Prince William isn’t a bad stand-in ;).
