‘Green Lantern’ Soars to Box Office #1

(Warner Bros.)

Green Lantern lit up the box office this weekend, and is on pace to take first place with approximately $60 million.

The Ryan ReynoldsBlake Lively superhero flick is just the latest of several comic book adaptations to hit theaters this summer, which could explain why its numbers are big but not eye-popping.

Jim Carrey’s family romp Mr. Popper’s Penguins will be in tight battle all weekend with Super 8 for second place. Both movies are tracking toward $19 million hauls.

X-Men: First Class should hang on to the #4 spot with roughly $12 million, ahead of four movies that have been big week after week: The Hangover Part II ($10 million), Kung Fu Panda 2 ($8.5 million), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($8 million) and Bridesmaids ($7 million).

Midnight in Paris ($5 million) and Judy Moody ($2.5 million) should finish out the Top 10.

Gossip Cop will have updates.
