Tom Hanks is set to star in a new film about the American cargo ship that was attacked by Somali pirates in 2009, Gossip Cop confirms.

Hanks will play Richard Phillips, the captain of the Maersk Alabama, who heroically gave himself up as a hostage to save his crew from the hijackers.

The movie is based on Phillips’ memoir, A Captain’s Duty, which recounts how he spent three days on a small lifeboat with his armed captors before a daring Navy SEALs rescue.

Wow, sounds like an incredibly intense role. Do you look forward to seeing Hanks in it?

Gilbert Gottfried has apologized for a series of tasteless Twitter jokes about the string of disasters in Japan.

“I sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended by my attempt at humor regarding the tragedy in Japan,” the comedian said in a statement. “I meant no disrespect, and my thoughts are with the victims and their families.”

Aflac fired Gottfried as the voice of the company’s well-known duck yesterday, saying that the former spokesman’s tweets (which have been deleted) “were lacking in humor” and didn’t represent Aflac’s feelings.

Meanwhile, Gottfried’s longtime ally Howard Stern defended the comedian on his show Tuesday, claiming that Aflac knew exactly what they were getting with the infamously insensitive Gottfried and had no right to fire him.

Joan Rivers also sides with Gottfried.

“Oh come on people – this is just outrageous! Gilbert Gottfried was FIRED from Aflac for making jokes about the tsunami in Japan,” tweeted the comedy legend.

“That’s what comedians do!!! We react to tragedy by making jokes to help people in tough times feel better through laughter.”

Jimmy Kimmel debuted a sequel to his “Hottie Body Hump Club” last night – where the late night host (aka fitness guru “Jimmy K”) introduces female celebs to his “Hottie Body Jim-Miracle Diet.”

Formerly “obese” stars such as Jessica Alba, Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Biel reveal how they slimmed down by adhering to Jimmy K’s simple diet plan – letting him “eat 4/5 of your food.”

Biel does the best sales job, saying, “I’m world-famous. And thanks to Jimmy K, I’m not a big fat f***ing whale.”

January Jones, Amanda Seyfried, Rebecca Romijn, Hedi Klum, Zoe Saldana, Anna Faris, Kristen Bell, and Neil Patrick Harris (as a doctor endorsing the diet) also star in the hilarious video.

Courteney Cox opens up about her separation from husband David Arquette in the April issue of Harper’s Bazaar, and it’s evident their relationship is still very much in limbo.

“We loved each other so much, and if anything I feel like we’ve been extremely successful at marriage,” says Cox. “If it doesn’t work out, I will have huge waves of pain about failing in that department.”

“But right now I don’t have that because I don’t know what the future holds and I guess because I have strong feelings for [Arquette].”

She says there was no single reason for the split, at one point explaining, ”I think every relationship has a point where you stop and reevaluate. Are you happy? Have you grown together or apart?”

It’s also obvious that she doesn’t blame Arquette’s erratic conduct for their problems.

“I’m not saying there wasn’t some crazy behavior,” admits Cox, “But if you know who David is, you know what his intentions are, how honest he is, and how big his heart is.”

The couple is chiefly interested in keeping life normal for six-year-old daughter Coco.

“She’s our number-one priority,” says Cox. “No matter what happens, she’ll be okay because she knows that she is completely safe, loved, and we’ll protect that more than anything in the world.”

As for dating other men, Cox claims she “has no desire right now.”

“I’m not saying never. It just seems weird. I don’t even know how that would happen or how you meet people.”

She also addresses the rumors (first debunked by Gossip Cop) that she and “Cougar Town” costar Brian Van Holt had a “sexy getaway” together.

“We were doing a scene out on a dock in Marina del Rey, and there were pictures of the two of us. As if that’s where I’m going to go to have a private moment,” jokes Cox. “How about the camera that was right there and all the cast members to the left that were completely cut out?”

Vanessa Hudgens is making headlines for another naked photo scandal similar to those she’s had in the past. But, in the new issue of Shape, the 22-year-old actress opens up about more normal aspects of her life.

She discusses the factors leading to her breakup with Zac Efron, her boyfriend of more than three years. Hectic working schedules and trying to maintain a long-distance relationship was the most challenging part.

“When you don’t have face-to-face time, it’s just different. Having an iPhone helped, but it wasn’t the same.”

Still, Hudgens doesn’t regret her time spent with Efron.

“We grew up together. It was nice to have someone to share all of those experiences with. It was a good thing. The relationship kept me grounded, and because I was with someone who knew me so well, I didn’t need to try to be someone I’m not.”

As for the future, Vanessa is already thinking about long term goals. She loves children and wants a husband and a baby by the time she’s 30.
