The official wedding portraits of Kate Middleton and Prince William (the newly minted Duchess and Duke of Cambridge) were impressive, and now the photographer who took them has revealed how he did it.
Hugo Burnand shot the official pictures at Buckingham Palace on the day of the nuptials and tells WWD about the intense preparation required to get the perfect photos as quickly as possible.
The three photographs were shot in the palace’s Throne Room just after the ceremony, and just before the newlyweds kissed on the balcony.
According to Burnand, the mood of the photos was intended to be “effortless, calm and beautiful.”
But to create the calm, Burnand and his team had every loose end tied ahead of time.
“We had spares of everything – cables, lights, cameras, lenses – and spares for the spares,” he tells the site.
“Before the day, we staged dress rehearsals with stand-ins and stop-watches. We knew that if everyone had sprinted back from Westminster Abbey, we would only have had 44 minutes to shoot.”
“In the end, we did everything in 26 minutes,” Burnand reveals.
Sarah Burton, the designer behind Middleton’s wedding gown, was on hand to help make sure Burnand’s staff of 7 had everything set up perfectly.
The lighting was especially important to everyone involved.
“We wanted the room to look like it was flooded with sunlight from a spring morning, filled with glorious light,” explains Burnand. “And we knew we couldn’t count on the weather, so we created it with the flip of a switch.”
Which of the shots is Burnand’s personal favorite? The one with the couple’s children attendants.
“It was the last one we took – and you can imagine everyone anxiously looking at their watches. I promised the kids jellybeans and wiggle worms, and it worked out,” he says.

Jason Sudeikis might play Joe Biden on “Saturday Night Live,” but at last night’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner he was (kind of) asked about another role: January Jones‘ baby daddy.
Jones, who split with Sudeikis earlier this year, recently announced that she’s pregnant.
When the Washington Post asked Sudeikis about her news, the comedian sounded hesitant to say anything, responding, “I’d rather — yes, but no.”
Asked whether he was surprised to find out Jones is pregnant, Sudeikis said, “No, I – No, I didn’t have anything [else to say].”
Sudeikis was at the Washington, D.C. event to support “SNL” colleague Seth Meyers, who served as the night’s keynote speaker.
Sudeikis hosts the MTV Movie Awards on June 5.

Someone tried to make a Justin Bieber omelette this weekend, throwing eggs at the singer during a performance at the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia.
It’s not really clear from the video below exactly what happened, except that The Biebs had an eggs-tremely close encounter.
As usual, he was saved by fancy footwork.
Who knows? Maybe this near yolk-ing was Wilson Warren’s prank payback.

Lindsay Lohan reportedly plans to plead “no contest” in her necklace theft case, according to a source for the Associated Press.
By not fighting the misdemeanor charge in court, Lohan could have the matter officially resolved, although it’s possible she’d face additional penalties.
Prosecutors allege that Lohan stole a $2,500 necklace from the Kamofie & Co. jewelery store in Venice, Calif. on January 22.
On April 22, Judge Stephanie Sautner reduced the theft charge from a felony to a misdemeanor, but also sentenced Lohan to 120 days in jail for violating her probation.
The actress was released on bail and expected to file an appeal.
During a subsequent surprise “Tonight Show” appearance, Lohan acknowledged, “I let a lot of my fans down,” and vowed to work hard to put her acting career back on track.
She and attorney Shawn Chapman Holley are due back in court for a pretrial hearing on May 11.
It’s not been confirmed whether she will enter a no contest plea before then.

Tallulah Belle Willis, Demi Moore and Bruce Willis‘ 17-year-old daughter, was reportedly cited for underage possession of alcohol in Hollywood last night.
Police officers reportedly saw three under-21 girls – including Willis – emerge from a vehicle with two bottles of alcohol at around 11:00 p.m. PT, according to TMZ.
The three young women were reportedly cited on the scene.
Moore is said to have arrived to pick up her daughter, since police could not release Willis, a minor, without an adult.
