While many politically savvy couples began the debate tonight thinking they’d go to their Halloween parties dressed as a (sexy) binder and a (sultry) Big Bird, the new #HorsesAndBayonets trend is forcing them to rethink their Halloween  couples costume idea.
Because against all odds, the American people managed to get a third meme/inside- joke-with-everyone-on-Twitter/hashtag-to-condescendingly-explain-in-the-office-tomorrow out of tonight’s presidential debate.
As someone watching half-watching the debate and half-trying to figure out what happened on Revenge last night, I felt the tension growing  on Twitter as President Obama and Mitt Romney debated each other without even attempting to say something meme-worthy.
People started getting desperate, trying out different hashtags, seeing what would stick and what new tumblr they should prepare to create.
Then finally when we thought we’d be stuck with #Battleship, President Obama saved the day with a hilarious one-liner just quirky enough to work! (And Mashable saved me from having to rewind and transcribe this moment myself.)
When squabbling about the size of the U.S. military force, the president delivered a one liner that sent Twitter into a wisecracking frenzy.
The exchange went a little something like this:
“You mention the Navy, for example, and the fact that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets,†Obama said. “We have these things called aircraft carriers and planes land on them. We have ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines.â€
Within seconds, everyone went from listening to the debates to trying to think of the best #HorsesAndBayonets jokes — as well as how to spin those jokes into tumblrs, book deals and CBS sitcoms. Just how many retweets does one need to get to go from funny in 140-characters to funny on an Urban Outfitters’ book table?
And while most Americans ended the debate hating their opposing political party, they all agreed that bayonets is a really hard word to spell. Is it it even legal to have a word with a “y” right in the middle of it, in between two vowels as if it belongs there?
Probably not. But you know what is legal? Making your significant other dress up as a sexy horse while you pull off the sexy bayonet costume. Think about it, SEXY BAYONET! That’s the kind of costume that defines Halloween — and you know what, it’s the kind of costume that redefines a couple.
Seriously, polls now show it’s the most culturally relevant pop culture Halloween couples costume you can choose for 2012.*
*If you’re attending a Halloween party tonight or tomorrow morning. Otherwise disregard and stick with your Plug and Socket costume.

As we’ve learned from Adele and her newborn, being in your mid-twenties is not too young to have a baby in Hollywood. That’s why it wasn’t so outrageous for several gossip sites over the weekend to ask if Glee star Lea Michele were hiding a baby bump. See, several photos popped up of Lea, with the usual incriminating factors: Casual leggings and T-shirt ensemble, with an unmistakable bulge in the stomach/uterus region. More than a few sites questioned if this could be the 26-year-old’s first baby bump spotting.
Most likely in reaction to the photos, Lea tweeted on Sunday that she was enjoying football and cooking. But lest her food baby go unrecognized, Lea tweeted an official denial this morning:

Good for her for laughing this off! There are stars who would be so insulted or exasperated that they would retreat altogether or issue some icy missive via their publicists. But Lea takes to Twitter, where she knows her fans and the sites that reported on her nonexistent fetus are, and gets to the bottom of this in just twenty-four hours.
It must be a Glee thing: We were really impressed six months ago when Amber Riley fainted on the red carpet and then tweeted out reassurances that she was neither pregnant nor starving herself and that she had simply gotten dizzy from the photographers’ cameras. These kids recognize that their every mundane action is being scrutinized, but they don’t let it control their lives. And they’re still new enough to the industry that they can be amused when people blow candid photos out of proportion.
I wonder if Lea will print out the articles claiming she’s preggers and frame them. Could be a fun thing to put in the baby’s nursery—you know, for someday when she decides to have a beautiful, weirdly-named celebrity baby.
