The Globe is the latest tabloid to falsely claim the all-female cast of Ocean’s 8 is in a massive feud. According to this newest story, the stars’ “titanic egos” are “sink[ing]” the film’s promo tour and the chances of a sequel. Gossip Cop can bust it.
“Ocean’s 8 leading ladies are nearly clawing each other’s eyes out in the ultimate catfight,” begins the article. The supermarket tabloid alleges that getting the cast together to promote the project has been “hell.” A so-called “insider” asserts that while Sandra Bullock “carries the movie,” her co-stars are “all huge stars, too, and expect special treatment.” To that end, it’s claimed that if Bullock gets a limo ride to a talk show appearance, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway and Rihanna “want a luxury ride, too.”

Rihanna is deemed the “biggest diva,” with the magazine’s unnamed and unidentifiable source alleging she has been “crowing to the other ladies about ‘my fans.’” It’s further claimed Bullock was left “fuming” when she was supposedly asked to get Rihanna’s autograph for fans at one of the premieres, and that Hathaway’s “hoity-toity attitude” has people “on the warpath.” Maintains the purported tipster, “The production staff is pulling its hair out trying to please everybody.” As for the future, the outlet’s alleged “snitch” contends, “Everyone is hoping the ladies will get back together for a sequel, but given how difficult it is to please them, whether that will actually happen is anyone’s guess.”
There’s a clear sign, though, that this is a bogus story when the publication repeats the already debunked claim that a therapist was hired to stop fights on set. Gossip Cop busted that allegation more than a year ago. Bullock later proved our reporting was right in an interview with People, saying, “Early on in the shoot we started reading stories that we were at each other’s throats, but the opposite was true.” In fact, there’s been so many wrong rumors about the Ocean’s 8 cast that we rounded up a bunch of them earlier this month.
To date, the only legitimate report of issues between the stars came a few weeks ago, when WWD’s minute-by-minute account of the New York Ocean’s 8 premiere asserted Bullock was “not happy” Rihanna was late. Of course, celebrities are late for red carpets all the time, making this a fairly miniscule problem in the grand scheme of things. And it’s quite clear from Rihanna herself how much she appreciates her colleagues. In an Instagram post celebrating Ocean’s 8 topping the box office, she wrote, “Congratulations to all the ladies and the entire team that was a part of this project from beginning to end! This makes me so happy and proud to be a woman!”
And in evidence of the camaraderie between them, co-star Mindy Kaling shared the post, as did Hathaway, who further expressed her gratitude on Instagram with the exclamation, “THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO MADE THIS POSSIBLE!!!!!” She also captioned another photo of Bullock and Blanchett with the hashtag, “#lovemygirls.” Additionally, this weekend, Ocean’s 8 passed $ 100 million at the box office. It’s now expected to end the up the second highest-earning film in the modern franchise, only behind 2001’s Ocean’s 11.
Obviously then, nothing has been ruined and there’s plenty of affection going around. Furthermore, the increasing grosses make a sequel all the more likely. Of course, it’s too soon for any official decision on another film, which makes it all the more ridiculous that the tabloid is casting doubt on the possibility. It also should be noted that the details of promo obligations are typically negotiated before cameras even roll, as such requirements from either the star or the studio are usually worked into cast contracts. So the notion that the actresses are now clashing over “special treatment,” something that would’ve been figured out long ago, doesn’t hold up.
Lastly, readers should be aware that the Globe published this clearly dubious tale even though reps for Hathaway, Bullock and Blanchett all told the magazine that it didn’t have any merit. Now Hathaway’s spokesperson tells Gossip Cop, “It is so typical that they would do something like this for women. They never make this [stuff] up when it’s men working together. All of the actresses in this film adore each other and continue to stay in touch with each other.”
