VIDAL Sassoon (17 January 1928 – 9 May 2012) not only a famous hairdresser. He was the son of immgrant Jews and raised in a children’s home:

Sassoon recalled England’s hostile political atmosphere earlier this year: “Anti-Semitism was absolutely rife,” he said in a podcast for the Holocaust Memorial Museum. “I mean, it was nothing for another kid to say to you, ‘Dirty Jew.’ And although England was a good place to be, especially with Churchill and the fight against the Nazis, there was always that sense of the Jews being second-class citizens.”

In 1947, the fascists again began menacing London, this time under the tutelage of Jeffrey Hamm, head of an organization of thugs calling themselves the “Association of British Ex-Servicemen.” For Sassoon, this was not a fate to be accepted lying down.

As a response to Hamm’s provocations, a gathering of young Jews known as the 43 Group—named for the number of people in the room at their founding—announced that the fight back had begun. Among them was the slender, if wiry, Sassoon. As Hamm’s followers gathered on street corners bellowing that “not enough Jews were burned at Belsen,” Sassoon and his comrades, armed with knives, coshes, and knuckledusters, set about breaking up fascist meetings. In another interview, Sassoon remembered turning up for work one morning with a black eye. “I just tripped on a hairpin,” he explained to the worried customer who had just settled into a barber’s chair for a haircut.

Angelina reportedly is back in Malta, continuing to prep their movie, ‘By The Sea.’ Brad is in London promoting ‘Fury.’ Yet when they do reunite, on the set of ‘By The Sea,’ it sounds like they’re going to be able to mix business with pleasure :). People managed to get some information about what their new movie, ‘By The Sea,’ is about. The movie, written by Angelina, reportedly is about a married couple in the South of France who become sexually obsessed with their neighbors. Oh my. A few years ago, Angelina talked about ascript she had written that sounds like it’s ‘By The Sea.’

I wrote something a few years ago for Brad and me. Just for fun. Just an independent little art piece. Because we don’t get to do those as much as we’d like. But it’s something really small and experimental.”

And in the past, Brad has talked about how Angelina is still a “bad girl,” adding:

Delightfully so. It’s not for public consumption.”

Hmmm. ‘By The Sea’ might give people a peek at this side. After the success of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey,’ movies might be willing to become more risque. Let’s be honest: this movie will come out even if ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ bombs with Brad and Angie as the leads. Sound interesting? My eyes will be PEELED looking for this trailer ;).

THE Mystery of Death Valley’s sliding rocks has been solved. Walkers in Death Valley stumble upon rocks lying at the end of trails. How did they move?

Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego:

Racetrack Playa is home to an enduring Death Valley mystery. Littered across the surface of this dry lake, also called a “playa,” are hundreds of rocks – some weighing as much as 320 kilograms (700 pounds) – that seem to have been dragged across the ground, leaving synchronized trails that can stretch for hundreds of meters.

What powerful force could be moving them? Researchers have investigated this question since the 1940s, but no one has seen the process in action – until now.

In a paper published in the journal PLOS ONE on Aug. 27, a team led by Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, paleobiologist Richard Norris reports on first-hand observations of the phenomenon.

Because the stones can sit for a decade or more without moving, the researchers did not originally expect to see motion in person. Instead, they decided to monitor the rocks remotely by installing a high-resolution weather station capable of measuring gusts to one-second intervals and fitting 15 rocks with custom-built, motion-activated GPS units. (The National Park Service would not let them use native rocks, so they brought in similar rocks from an outside source.) The experiment was set up in winter 2011 with permission of the Park Service. Then – in what Ralph Lorenz of the Applied Physics Laboratory at the Johns Hopkins University, one of the paper’s authors, suspected would be  “the most boring experiment ever” – they waited for something to happen.

But in December 2013, Norris and co-author and cousin Jim Norris arrived in Death Valley to discover that the playa was covered with a pond of water seven centimeters (three inches) deep. Shortly after, the rocks began moving.

“Science sometimes has an element of luck,” Richard Norris said. “We expected to wait five or ten years without anything moving, but only two years into the project, we just happened to be there at the right time to see it happen in person.”

Their observations show that moving the rocks requires a rare combination of events. First, the playa fills with water, which must be deep enough to form floating ice during cold winter nights but shallow enough to expose the rocks. As nighttime temperatures plummet, the pond freezes to form thin sheets of “windowpane” ice, which must be thin enough to move freely but thick enough to maintain strength. On sunny days, the ice begins to melt and break up into large floating panels, which light winds drive across the playa, pushing rocks in front of them and leaving trails in the soft mud below the surface.

She has been famed for her pert posterior ever since she wore the infamous gold hotpants for her Spinning Around video in 2000.

Kristen discussed what it was like to get a lot of tabloid attention.

I never really thought of anything in terms of designing a career. I never tried to shape people’s perspectives of me, which is something that a lot of people do. There are certain actors and artists who want to be a certain kind of actor or certain kind of artist, and I’m really not like that. I have very much fallen into every situation, every creative and not creative experience, that I have delved into, based on gut. Therefore true regret can never eat at me.

In terms of what people consume about you and then subsequently how they shape their opinion of you, none of it is wrong. It’s all a varied assortment of whatever flavors they’ve picked up at the newsstand or in the theater or on the Internet. But that literally is something that is not designed by me and so it’s not something that bothers me. But I don’t want to add to this already pre-existing, enormous mound of salacious bulls**t that isn’t real. That’s not me defending anything. That’s true.

Just being in the middle of it it’s weird to comment on it…The stories are fun, but do you not realize that there are characters that have been cast in the media and people like to get their weekly fill on these stories. It’s like soap opera. I try not to let it mess with me, because my true personal life, as much as people think they know about it, they don’t know d**k s**t. Who could?

By the way nobody knows. Nobody knows what the f**k is going on. You’re going to die. You’re going to lay next to the people that you know the most in life, the people that you’re going to grow old with. But you’re going to lay next to them in the middle of the night deeply curious about them and who they are, because nobody f***ing knows anything.

The end got a bit extreme, but I think she actually has a healthy attitude about tabloid attention. Ultimately, a lot of it probably is made up!

I know nothing about Chris, but according to Us Weekly, he was a fan favorite for his “romantic gestures, genuine search for love, and boyish good looks.” Apparently Chris was up against one of his former rivals, Arie Luyendyk Jr, who was said to be “p*ssed” not to have been selected. I’ve gotta ask the ‘Bachelor’ fans:

THE BREAKDOWN: Here is how Celebrity hairstylist Gregory Russell gave nominee Christina Hendricks textured waves inspired by her red Marchesa Gown for tonight’s red carpet:

• To begin, Russell applied John Frieda Luxurious Volume Building Mousse to Christina’s roots when her hair was damp
• He then sprayed the John Frieda Luxurious Volume Fine to Full Blow-Out Spray to her ends and rough dried/scrunched her hair until it was 95% dry
• Next, Russell created a center part and used a multi bristle flat brush to smooth the hair, without stretching it, so that it had a lot of body.
• To create the waves, he used a 1-inch flat iron in sections to create texture and body. With a 1.25-inch curling iron, Russell then took small pieces at random and curled away from the face to add both rotation and dimension. For desired volume and shape, he brushed through the lengths of her hair with a wide toothed comb and back combed the underneath.
• To finish, Russell sprayed John Frieda Luxurious Volume All Day Hold Hairspray for hold and long lasting shine.
