Michael died at his home in Goring, England. His rep said on Sunday, “It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period.” No cause of death has been given at this point. The spokesman added, “The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.”

In 2013, Michael was involved in a car crash, which required he be airlifted to a hospital. An ambulance spokesperson told media outlets at the time that Michael had suffered a head injury. And as Gossip Cop reported in December 2011, the singer was in a life-and-death battle with pneumonia. After spending several weeks in a Vienna hospital, the singer said in an emotional statement to reporters outside his London home that the ordeal was “by far, the worst month of my life.” He thanked his doctors for “keeping me alive.” Michael added at the time, “I’m incredibly fortunate to be here… If I wasn’t spiritual enough [before the illness], then I certainly am now.”

Over the years, Michael had battled drug and alcohol issues. He was arrested in 2010 after he crashed his car into a London storefront while high on marijuana. The Wham! singer even spent some time behind bars for it.

Michael has several incidents that resulted in him being busted for driving drunk or high. He later said he “deserved” his jail time for driving under the influence. “This was a hugely shameful thing to have done repeatedly, so karmically I felt like I had a bill to pay,” expressed Michael. He continued, “It’s so much easier to take any form of punishment if you believe you actually deserve it, and I did.” he said.
