Chelsea Handler Slams Instagram As “Sexist” After Topless Photo Gets Deleted

Chelsea Handler slammed Instagram on Thursday after they deleted a topless picture she posted of herself. The comedienne had shared a side-by-side photo of a shirtless Vladimir Putin on a horse next to herself on a horse also without a top (see right and below).

Handler captioned the snapshot, “Anything a man can do, a woman has the right to do better. #kremlin.” It wasn’t up for long, however, before Instagram pulled it down and sent the star a warning, advising her to “read our community guidelines to learn what kinds of posts are allowed and how you can keep Instagram safe.”

The former “Chelsea Lately” host was not pleased. She questioned, “If a man posts a photo of his nipples, it’s ok, but not a woman? Are we in 1825?” Handler also shared the same photo on Twitter and wrote, “Taking this down is sexist. I have every right to show I have a better body than Putin.”

Handler then defiantly re-posted her deleted image. “If instagram takes this down again, you’re saying Vladimir Putin Has more 1st amendment rights than me. Talk to your bosses,” she wrote. It stayed up for some time… before Instagram pulled the picture again.

Handler, of course, is not the first star to run afoul of the photo-sharing site’s regulations. As Gossip Cop previously reported, last year Madonna‘s risqué pics led Instagram to send her a threatening letter, saying that she had violated their policies with pics that “contain nudity or mature content,” and would see her account disabled if she continued to do so.

And earlier this year, Scout Willis, the daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, made waves when she walked around topless in New York City to protest Instagram’s no-nudity policy. Like Handler, she, too, questioned why female nipples could not be shown on the site, even in instances that were depicting non-sexual acts like breastfeeding. Gossip Cop reported that Willis said she wanted to point out “that what is legal by New York state law is not allowed on Instagram,” and tackle “the taboo of the nipple in the 21st century, public breastfeeding, slut shaming, fat shaming, breast cancer awareness, body positivity, gender inequality, and censorship.”
