President Donald Trump gave a highly-anticipated speech at CPAC 2017 on Friday. Watch the video below.
CPAC is the annual Conservative Political Action Conference. It is traditionally held in Maryland by the American Conservative Union. The multi-day event features appearances from right-leaning politicians, pundits, and activists, and this year’s conference included a number of people from Trump’s administration. Most notably, Kellyanne Conway, Steve Bannon, Reince Priebus and Vice President Mike Pence all spoke on Thursday.
Interestingly, while Trump has a years-long history with the gathering (he hinted to a presidential run in his 2011 speech), the mogul-turned-politician actually canceled his planned 2016 speech at the last minute to focus on campaigning. Of course, Trump went on to win the election, and now many were eager to hear what he would say today.
The president began by saying, “Than you, everybody. Great to be with you. Great to be at CPAC. I t’s a place I have really — I love this place. Love you people. So thank you very much.” He added, “I wouldn’t miss chance to speak to my friends. These are my friends. We’ll see you again next year, and the year after that.”
After telling the audience to sit down, Trump said, The dishonest media, they’ll say he didn’t get a standing ovation. You want to know why? Because everybody stood and nobody sat… They are the worst.” That led everyone who just sat to stand again, chanting “USA.” Trump went on to discuss his CPAC history, and said he feared he’d be “too controversial” last year.
“Now you finally have a president, finally. Took you a long time. And it’s patriots like you that made it happen, believe me,” he said. “The media didn’t think we would win. The pundits didn’t think we’d win… But they all underestimated the power of the people.”
Trump went on, “We are all fighting the fake news. It’s phony, fake. A few days ago I called the media the enemy of the people, and they are… They’re very dishonest people.” He then stressed that he was calling the “fake news” outlets the enemy, not the media in general. “So I’m not again the media. I’m not against the press. I don’t deserve bad stories if I deserve them. I love good stories… But I am only against the fake news media or press. Fake. They have to leave that word,” he insisted.
He then slammed “dishonest” reported and the “Clinton News Network.” Trump swore he “loves the First Amendment” and “nobody loves it better than me,” and said it gave him “the right to criticize fake news, and criticize is strongly.” He then declared that he had a “victory” like none other, and said it was a “victory and a win for conservative values.”
“There’s such love for everything we stood for,” Trump said, touting his “movement.” In defining that “movement,” he said, “We are a nation that will put its own citizens first.” When the crowd chanted to “build the wall,” the president promised it’s going to start “soon” and “way ahead of schedule.” He added, “We’re getting the bad ones out. Bad dudes… All I’ve done is keep my promise.”
Trump once again said, “I inherited a mess, believe me. I also inherited a failed healthcare system… Obamacare doesn’t work, folks.” He further said he wanted to let it “implode,” and have the “Democrats beg.” He then lamented America’s lack of “winning,” and promised, “We’re gonna win big, folks… The era of empty talk is over.”
