Leonardo DiCaprio’s longstanding Oscars losing streak could finally come to an end on Sunday. The actor, who has been nominated six times during his career, is the frontrunner for his gripping role in The Revenant. Gossip Cop takes a look back at his journey and Academy Awards red carpet style. See photos below.
DiCaprio scored his first nomination in 1994 at the age of 19 for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. The then-Hollywood newbie lost out to the older and more seasoned Tommy Lee Jones for his role in The Fugitive.
The Academy would wait another 11 years before nominating the actor again. In 2005, DiCaprio scored a nod for his role in The Aviator. The actor might have had the power of director Martin Scorsese on his side, but Jamie Foxx’s role in Ray proved to be more powerful with Oscar voters.
Two years later, DiCaprio was honored with a nomination again, this time for his role in Blood Diamond. That same year, he appeared in the Scorsese-directed The Departed, which many thought he should have be nominated for instead of his role as a diamond smuggler. Forrest Whitaker ended up besting DiCaprio for his role in The Last King of Scotland.
In 2014, the actor scored two nominations. First for his role as Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street and another as one of the film’s producers. The film lost in the Best Picture category to 12 Years a Slave and the actor lost to Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club.
DiCaprio’s losing streak could easily end this year. The actor braved unthinkable conditions filming the Alejandro González Iñárritu film, not to mention bravely fighting a CGI bear! More importantly, DiCaprio has won a number of awards already for his performance in The Revenant, including the Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Guild Award. Barring an upset, Gossip Cop will assume the actor has his acceptance speech ready!
