Are Matt Lauer and Katie Couric planning to co-host the “Today” show again in an attempt to force Megyn Kelly out? That’s the latest claim from one of the tabloids, but Gossip Cop can exclusively set the record straight. We’re told it’s “not true.”

The seemingly manufactured story can be found in this week’s issue of the National Enquirer, which blares in a new headline, “Matt & Katie Team Up Against Megyn!” In the accompanying tale, the supermarket tabloid asserts that Lauer is “bringing back his old sidekick” Couric to “save the struggling ‘Today’ show from ratings killer Megyn Kelly.” A so-called “source” is then quoted as saying, “Megyn’s ratings are dragging down the whole show. Matt and Katie had some of the best chemistry in daytime TV history, and if anyone can bring the ‘Today’ show back from the brink it’s them.”

The publication’s questionable “insider” goes on to claim that Lauer and Couric, who are “willing to work together” to save the morning show, want to “bring ‘Today’ back to the top of the heap!” Further purports the magazine’s dubious tipster, “Matt’s been with the show for 20 years and is fiercely protective of the brand,” adding, “They know they can deliver ratings, and that would be more than enough to drive Megyn out of the door!”

But there’s a number of issues with the Enquirer’s latest report. Firstly, the magazine’s assertion about the morning show’s ratings being “in the toilet” is bogus. The “Today” show’s 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. time slot with Lauer and Savannah Guthrie, who bizarrely isn’t mentioned in the entire piece, is achieving solid ratings. Secondly, but seemingly unbeknownst to the publication, Kelly’s show is improving in the ratings. But even if Lauer and Couric once again joined forces to co-host the morning show, it wouldn’t force Kelly out, as her show starts in a different time slot.

Still, Gossip Cop investigated the article, and a trusted “Today” show source tells us it’s “not true.” Additionally, we’re further told by a source close to Couric, who hosted the “Today” show with Lauer from 1997 to 2006, that the tale has no truth to it.

Of course, we’re not remotely surprised by the tabloid’s most recent concoction. Remember, Gossip Cop corrected the often discredited magazine for falsely alleging in May that Lauer’s wife had warned him not to cheat with Kelly when she started working at NBC. Much like that inaccurate story, this newest tale is equally false.
