Carpenters have an expression: “Measure twice, cut once.”
HollywoodLife subscribes to a different philosophy: “Guess twice, backtrack once.”
Yesterday, the contentedly careless site shrieked, “Sandra Bullock May Never Make Another Movie Again! She’s Leaving Hollywood!”
The blog picked up on a report that Bullock is “packing up and leaving” Los Angeles so she won’t have to raise her new baby in a “toxic” environment. What’s more, “she might never make another film again.”
So HollywoodLife took the bait and ran the declarative headline, later congratulating Bullock on her decision. “Good for you, Sandy!” gushes the site, which has the weird habit of addressing every celebrity personally. “You’ve always seemed like the really down-to-Earth type, and a break from the madness of Hollywood is exactly what you need right now.”
Well, glad that’s settled! Let’s just move on…
“EXCLUSIVE! George Lopez Reveals Sandra is NOT Leaving Hollywood OR Movies!” blares the site today.
Um… what?
“When we asked George whether Sandra would quit moviemaking as was reported earlier this week,” continues HollywoodLife, Lopez laughed and responded, “‘Are you kidding me!, (sic) I think Sandra is working on movies now.”
“As was reported earlier this week?”
Really?
Let’s borrow HollywoodLife’s taste for writing in the second person.
You reported it yesterday.
When your headline announces that Bullock is leaving Hollywood to retire, you are repeating a rumor without checking.
When the only person you bother asking laughs at your premise, it isn’t time to crow about an “EXCLUSIVE!”
It’s time to admit you just reversed yourself.
Gossip Cop looks forward to HollywoodLife printing a rumor that it’ll rain tomorrow before getting the scoop when it’s sunny.
