Wait. Is the tiny town from Footloose in Iran or something?
Because six young people just got arrested for dancing around to Pharrell’s hit single Happy in a YouTube video they shot together!
No, seriously. This happened.
The group was thrown behind bars for making an “obscene video clip that offended the public morals,†according to Tehran’s police chief, Hossein Sajedinia.
He ordered the arrests of the three men and three women after their video went viral!
Watch it (below) and prepare to think, “what’s the big friggin’ deal here?!?â€
Not everyone in Iran is as outraged by this display of joy though, including Iranian president Hassan Rouhani!
He actually tweeted his support of the group after their arrest, stating:
“#Happiness is our people’s right. We shouldn’t be too hard on behaviors caused by joyâ€
These kids also have the songwriter himself on their side! Pharrell denounced this senseless imprisonment, saying:
“It is beyond sad that these kids were arrested for trying to spread happiness.â€
Some good news came in today though – 5 of the 6 people locked up have since been released! Officials however have not let the director of the video go just yet.
So absurd!
Happiness is NOT a crime!
We LOVE this video and so will you!
